Servus TV celebrated the success story of the Red Bull Stratos team live this evening in Salzburg, Austria.
Felix Baumgartner joined Col. (ret) Joe Kittinger and Art Thompson along with Servus TV hosts Andreas Gröbl and Andreas Jäger for the first time at Hangar-7 along with team members Mike Todd (Life Support Engineer), Luke Aikins (Skydiving Consultant), Andy Walshe (Performance Director) and Jonathan Clark (Medical Director).
Felix Baumgartner shared for the first time detail about the mission; the most memorable moments after landing and the goal of contributing to science and aerospace. Speaking of amazing moments, let me introduce you to the human sonic boom:Shortly after Felix jumped from 128,100 ft, the ground crews at different locations reported hearing a sonic boom. Audio from a video recording captures what is believed to be the sonic boom made by Felix Baumgartner as he passed through the speed of sound. The footage was recorded using a video camera pointing skyward as Baumgartner accelerated to a speed of 833.9 mph (1,342.8 km/h) during his jump from the edge of space.
Four different groups of observers on the ground state they heard the sonic boom. Dr Alex Garbino, part of the Red Bull Stratos medical team, said, “We were about 4 or 5 miles away. It sounded like a very distant faint thud, like a double thud. At first, I didn’t recognize the sound and then I thought, wait was that a sonic boom.” And Brian Powell, Division Chief at Roswell Fire Department, added, “It’s not as loud as a fighter plane would make. But you could distinctly tell it was a sonic boom - a ‘boom-boom’. Everyone all at once said, ‘did you just hear that?’. We knew exactly what it was.”
